Allen Park, MI - The FNHC New Year holiday skate was a resounding success with a fun night of hockey enjoyed by 20 of the FNHC's finest and a paid attendance of 2 fans in the stands. "My daddy rocks at hockey," read a fluorescent sign held up proudly by one of the fans. While the fans stomped on the stands and chanted for "rock daddy" Vunderkindt, the FNHC players skated onto the ice.Warmups ensued, and the players separated into the traditional DarkSide and LiteSide teams, with some interesting lineup changes to note. In addition to Slava and La Package, a youthful infusion comprising the offspring of the two DarkSide stalwarts created a nice mix of experience and youth on the Dark end of the ice.
The LiteSide had some new faces too. While Batman was riding the snow trails up north, Tool Time and Domi took the opportunity to don their beloved pale sweaters, significantly improving the LiteSide's fire power.
As far as any competition goes, it was over early. The LiteSide jumped out to a 4-1 lead and never looked back, drilling the DarkSide 12-2 in the first period. The DarkSide did have some excitement in the period with Slava and La Package tallying the two Dark goals in the period, but the competition over and a fun, recreational holiday skate took shape.
As the recreational phase of the skate began (2nd & 3rd periods) Tool Time, Domi and Mailman scored spectacular goals and skated up and down the ice, scoring at will through the second half of the 3rd period, when the Saloka Scoring Units overheated and the lights beaming the 33-8 score burned out. The youthful triumvirate of Wolverine, Package Jr. and Grambo poured it on late to try to salvage some level of hockey pride for their aging fathers, but it was too little too late.
"It would have been different if Big D would have been here tonight," said Slava, "he coordinated the ice time, but got stuck at a hockey game in Saginaw due to the weather and couldn't make it. If we had his wheels and his shot it would have been a far different night."
Such as it was, Big D was not there and the LiteSide ruled the ice for the last skate of 2009. "What a fun skate!" smiled Package Jr. "we'll have to do this again next year."
And so the hated rivals left the ice and headed to the locker rooms to shower up and head out to a local establishment to share some New Year's Eve cheer. "Here's to a new year of hockey fun, hot dogs and beer!," said Gump as he raised his glass in a toast, "let's make 2010 the best yet!"
Happy New Year FNHC!
