16th SEASON
The Friday Night Hockey Club has been dedicated to “hockey, exercise, fun, hot dogs and beer” since 1995. Originally started at the River Rouge Ice rink, the club moved to The Ice Box in Trenton where the club has taken the ice every Friday night since between Labor Day and Memorial Day at 10:20pm.
Over the years, the two teams have divided into The LiteSide and The DarkSide with a core group of skaters making up the teams. As the seasons progressed, the DarkSide dominated the action winning 9 of 11 Slava Cup playoff series in the first 12 years. Due to the lopsided playoff results the league elected to begin the practice of assigning captains for post-season play and having a playoff draft to determine the teams. This change has proven to make the Slava Cup playoff series a much more competitive event.
As the FNHC grew in popularity it was not uncommon to have 20+ skaters show up on Friday nights. The enthusiasm surrounding the club generated some additional social events such as the annual Friday Night Hockey Club golf outing held during the Summer. Each year an FNHC golf champion is determined, the winner winning an autographed bottle of champagne.
Another social event occurs in the parking lot of the Ice Box after each skate. The players gather for beers and hot dogs to reflect on the night’s game and talk about current NHL and other sports events. Each player takes a turn being the Beer Boy or “The Dog” each week to share the cost of providing the food and drink for the post game gathering.
FNHC hockey: hard-working hockey, excellent exercise, fantastic fun and great grilling. Who could ask for anything more?
